Smell Proof with Beeswax part 1

Watershed Rolling Paper's carbon-lined travel bag is designed to securely contain odors. Applying beeswax to the exterior twill fabric can further enhance its smell-proof and water-resistant properties. This simple treatment not only boosts the bag's functionality but also extends its lifespan.

Why Apply Beeswax?

Beeswax creates a natural, durable barrier on fabric surfaces, sealing fibers to provide additional odor containment and moisture resistance. This treatment is particularly beneficial for travel bags, offering extra protection against the elements and daily wear.

 Materials Needed and Estimated Costs

1. Organic Beeswax:

   - Beesworks Yellow Beeswax Bars (6 oz): Approximately $10.95.

   - Mary Tylor Naturals Organic Yellow Beeswax Pellets (1 lb):* Around $14.95.

2. Hemp Soap:

   - Hemp Bar Soap, 100% Natural Ingredients (Single Bar): Approximately $7.99.

   - Dr. Bronner's 18-In-1 Hemp Pure-Castile Soap - Peppermint (32 fl oz): Around $15.99.

3. Additional Tools:

   - Soft Cloths: A pack of 12 microfiber cloths is typically around $10.

   - Hairdryer:If not already owned, a basic model can be purchased for approximately $20.

Estimated Total Cost:

- With Beeswax Bars and Single Hemp Soap Bar: $10.95 (beeswax) + $7.99 (soap) + $10 (cloths) = $28.94.

- With Beeswax Pellets and Dr. Bronner's Soap: $14.95 (beeswax) + $15.99 (soap) + $10 (cloths) = $40.94.

Note: These estimates exclude the cost of a hairdryer, assuming you already have one. Prices may vary based on location and retailer.

Step-by-Step Beeswax Application Process

Step 1: Pre-Clean Your Bag

1. Hand Wash the Exterior: Gently hand wash the bag’s twill exterior using a small amount of hemp soap and lukewarm water. This removes any dirt or oils that could prevent the wax from bonding with the fabric.

2. Clean the Interior:Wipe down the inner polyester lining and carbon layer with a damp cloth. Avoid excessive moisture; a quick wipe should be sufficient to remove dust or odors.

3. Allow to Air Dry:After washing, allow the bag to air dry completely for 2-3 hours. Ensure the entire bag, inside and out, is dry before proceeding with the wax application.

Step 2: Melt the Beeswax

In a double boiler, melt a small amount of beeswax (1-2 tablespoons if using pellets). The wax should be warm and liquid but not too hot to touch comfortably.

Step 3: Apply the Wax to the Bag’s Exterior

1. Spread a Thin, Even Layer: Using a soft cloth, rub a thin layer of melted beeswax onto the twill fabric. Focus on seams and edges where odors may escape, but avoid applying wax directly to the zippers to prevent sticking.

2. Work in Sections: For an even application, work in small sections to ensure the wax doesn’t cool before you spread it across the fabric.

Step 4: Set the Wax with Heat

1. Use a Hairdryer: On a low heat setting, move the hairdryer in small, circular motions over the waxed areas. This will help the beeswax absorb into the twill fabric, creating a smooth, protective layer.

2. Allow to Cool: After heating, set the bag aside in a cool, dry area for at least 24 hours to allow the wax to fully bond with the fabric.

 Maintaining Your Beeswax Layer

The beeswax coating on your Watershed Rolling Paper carbon-lined travel bag should last approximately 3-6 months, depending on use. If you notice the fabric becoming less water-resistant or the smell-proof qualities diminishing, simply repeat the application process. Regular maintenance will keep your travel bag in top condition, enhancing both its longevity and effectiveness.

By investing in these materials and following this process, you can effectively enhance the odor protection and durability of your travel bag without a significant expense.
